Braces Emergency—What to Do When Brackets or Wires Break
Chances are, if you wear traditional braces, you’ll have a bracket or wire break at least once during your treatment. The first thing we tell patients of our LN Dental Chester Hill is not to panic. That said, however, you shouldn’t put off getting your broken braces fixed as soon as you possibly can. Not only can broken braces disrupt orthodontic treatment, but a damaged metal brace or wire can be uncomfortable and even painful, causing cuts and abrasions inside the mouth.
There are minor repairs you can probably do yourself, but you should do your best to visit the orthodontist straight away. At LN dental, we make the following suggestions to our patients who have braces.
Protect Your Mouth From Broken Braces
If a broken bracket or wire is sharp, you might need to do something about it before you can get in to see the dentist. A tweezers can come in handy to bend the bracket or wire into a more comfortable position until you can get to the dentist. You can also use dental wax to cover up sharp points. A nail clipper or small pliers can also be used to cut off the end of the wire so there is a smooth, neat finish.
If a bracket breaks away from the tooth but is still hanging from the wire, it can move. You can use a sterilised pair of tweezers to slide the bracket along the wire so it is sitting in the right place and facing the proper direction. If you are experiencing discomfort, you can use dental wax to cover the surface.
Try to Avoid Breakages, When Possible
The most common reason braces break is because of hard, crunchy or sticky foods. It’s best to avoid these types of foods when undergoing orthodontics treatment. If you do indulge, take the extra time to cut foods into small pieces or eat something else. Once your orthodontic treatment is over, you can eat all of your favourite foods without worry.
If you have braces already or are considering orthodontics treatment from our LN Dental Chester Hill, we welcome your call today.
