Habits That Reduce The Life Expectancy Of The Implant

Gösta Larsson, who lived in Gothenburg, Sweden, received an implant in 1965 – The first patient of human history. When he died in 2006, his implants were still intact. They accompanied him for more than 40 years.

Mr. Sven Johansson, the second patient with the implants in 1967, also came from Gothenburg. He also had an excellent record – The most prolonged dental implants. Mr.Sven transplanted six implants in the upper jaw, five implants in the lower jaw. They were used for almost fifty years.

Two typical examples show that dental implants are very durable. But it does not mean that the implants will have a long life if they are not taken good care of. The same as real teeth, the implants’ life expectancy will be reduced because of some bad habits.

Smoking

The dental implant is not a major surgery, but the healing process also requires an adequate nutritional supplementation. Gum tissues, bones only heal quickly when they are provided much blood. However, the nicotine in tobacco will constrict blood vessels and inhibit blood circulation, leading to a decrease in healing the wound and even increasing infection ability.

Quit smoking after implant surgery is completed. Many patients are unsuccessful in the implant because of smoking.

The patient’s habits of biting

Some patients have severe grinding or excessive force of the bite at night. The excessive chewing force can cause extreme pressure on the implant root, causing bone digestion, and losing the implant abutment.

Poor oral hygiene

Poor oral hygiene affects the development of the implant root during the transplant process and the long life of the dental implant after successful transplantation.

Many patients have inflammation and infection for a long time due to periodontal disease and inadequate oral hygiene after the implant. This habit will reduce the life expectancy of dental implants.

The average length of the implant is about 8mm or more. Research shows that under ideal conditions, after ten years of use, the bones around the implant area will digest about 1mm. Therefore, under normal circumstances, a successful transplant has more than an 80% chance of using at least 20 to 30 years.

Medicines for osteoporosis treatment

In recent years, it has been discovered that some medications for osteoporosis treatment can impact bone transformation and cause osteoarthritis complications for patients, which may also lose the implant abutment.

Non-compliance with a treatment plan

Experts learn the implant’s success based on the good cooperation between the patient and the dentist; the frequency of examinations must be continuous and adapted to different stages of life.

It is essential to evaluate and choose a suitable clinic for the implant. The doctors are skilled and experienced and care for the patients to give the best results.
