Sedation Dentistry

Often, patients who avoid the dentist express that they feel anxious about the dental clinic or treatment, or because of a past negative experience. At LN Dental Centre, Dr Hoang Nhan is compassionate toward these feelings. He aims to help every patient feel comfortable when visiting our Chester Hill, NSW dental clinic. We also realise that patients sometimes need help relaxing while in the dental chair. This is why we offer both nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation dentistry.

What Is Nitrous Oxide Dental Sedation?

Nitrous oxide (N2O) sedation, often considered the mildest form of sedation for dentistry, is a colourless and odourless gas. We blend nitrous with oxygen and deliver into the system through a small nose mask. As the gas enters the body, it creates feelings of calmness and well-being, making it perfect for patients who have mild to moderate dental anxiety. Nitrous also provides a solution for those patients who have difficulty getting numb.

When the procedure is over, we stop the nitrous oxide delivery and switch to pure oxygen. The pure oxygen will revive the senses as the nitrous oxide leaves the system in just a few minutes. One of the benefits patients enjoy about this mild dental sedation technique is that you do not need a driver to or from your dental appointment, and you can return to your routine immediately.

Who Benefits from Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

  • Adults with longer appointments
  • Children who feel worried
  • Anyone with dental anxiety
  • People who have a hard time getting numb

At LN Dental Centre, we will make every effort to help you feel confident and relaxed while you are with us. If you want to learn more about nitrous oxide options in our Chester Hill dental clinic, please give us a call.

How Does Oral Sedation Dentistry Work?

When patients have moderate to severe dental anxiety, their oral health can suffer. Putting off treatment for months or years often means more complex and costly procedures in the future. Or perhaps more alarming, it could result in a painful dental emergency. To help patients who otherwise would like to avoid the dental clinic, we offer oral sedation dentistry. Oral sedation is a moderate form of sedation achieved through prescription medication.

To determine if oral sedation is safe for you, we will first complete and thorough medical history evaluation. This eliminates any contraindications with other medications or conditions.

While you will feel completely relaxed, you will remain conscious and able to answer questions. Some patients are so relaxed that they doze off in the dental chair.

One of the side-effects to oral sedation is that time moves more quickly, and memories can be a bit fuzzy. If you prefer to dream away your dental appointments, oral sedation dentistry might be something to consider.

Unlike nitrous oxide, patients will need to take the rest of the day to recover from the medications and will need someone to look after them on the way to and from the clinic.

Who Can Benefit from Oral Sedation Dentistry?

  • Adults with dental anxiety
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex
  • Those who want to complete more treatment in one sitting
  • People who have difficulty getting completely numb
