Service Overview

When you have an infection in the root of your tooth experiencing dental pain that has gone from bad to worse in a short amount of time, we will likely recommend a root canal. This dental treatment is a common procedure that can save an infected tooth and alleviate the pain of a toothache.

The procedure involves creating access to the interior of your tooth so we can remove the infected nerve tissue and pulp. Although the procedure is often associated with pain, it is usually the pain of toothache that people are thinking about.

The root canal procedure is not painful since we will completely anesthetize the area before starting treatment. Once we remove the infected tissue, in fact, your pain will be greatly diminished. The area might be tender for a few days after the root canal, but overall, you will feel much better.

What Are the Signs That Root Canal Therapy Is Needed?

Some of the signs that you might need a root canal to include:

  • A toothache that goes from bad to unbearable in a relatively short amount of time. Often the tooth hurts more when you lie down.
  • A white spot on your gums near the affected tooth.
  • Swollen gums near the affected tooth.
  • A tooth that might be overly sensitive to hot and cold foods and liquids.

None of these signs should be ignored, so it’s crucial that you contact a quality dental clinic in order to save your tooth and to prevent the infection from spreading to your healthy teeth.

Will You Need a Dental Crown After a Root Canal?

We generally recommend that you get a dental crown after a root canal to strengthen the remaining tooth structure. Removing the living tissue from the tooth root results in a tooth that is brittle and prone to breakage. A dental crown will protect your tooth and ensure you can chew on it again comfortably.

Dental pain is never normal, and if you have a severe toothache, you may have an infection deep within the tooth root. We welcome your call to our dental surgery to book an appointment for an examination so we can determine whether or not you need a root canal.
